  • The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is located in the district of Sepang in the southern part of the state of Selangor in Malaysia approximately 28 miles from the city of Kuala Lumpur.
  • The Kuala Lumpur International Airport was formally opened on June 27, 1998 by the 10th head of state of Malaysia, Tuanku Ja’afar of the modern thirteenth state of the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Negeri Sembilan, one week before the opening of the Hong Kong International Airport and just in time for the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
  • The first flight to arrive at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport was flight MH 1236, a domestic flight aboard Malaysia airlines arriving from from Kuantan Airport. The first international flight arriving to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport was the Malaysian Airlines flight number MH 188 which arrived from MalĂ© International Airport.
  • The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is designed to handle a capacity of 70 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo annually. The airport as of 2013 has handled over 47 million passengers and is recognized as the fastest growing airport with an annual growth of over 19 percent.
  • The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is operated by the Malaysian airport company who is also responsible for managing most of the airports in Malaysia, and is additionally acknowledged as the primary hub for the airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia, MASkargo, Air Asia X the Department of Civil Aviation and Malindo Air.
  • Kuala Lumpur International Airport has three parallel runways. Two which are used as major runways KLIA and a third runway KLIA2. Both KLIA runways, the first which is 13,123 feet long and 197 feet wide and the second, 13,186 feet long by 197 feet wide are located 2 kilometers apart are designed for simultaneous take-offs and landings. The third runway for KLIA2 which is 13,123 feet in length and 197 wide is monitored by a separate and dedicated air traffic tower which is to date the smallest air traffic tower in the world.
  • The Main Terminal Building (MTB) of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport covering a total of 4,200,00 sq ft is positioned in-between two runways and consists of 39 square roof units designed for future expansion. There are a total of 216 check-in counters, located on 6 different islands, identified by the use of the letters A through to M not including the letter I.
  • Kuala Lumpur International was one of the first Asia Pacific airports to become 100% Bar Coded Boarding Pass capable.
  • Due to the international flights operating from the airport, the terminals are equipped with facilities designed for immigration processing and security measures which involve the scanning of both international and domestic passengers. Most of the international flights are handled by the Satellite terminal while the main terminal building handles the domestic traffic.
